EXCELLENT RESULTS OF NATIONAL SALE IS INDICATION OF GOOD DEMAND FOR DOHNE MERINOS

National Dohne Merino sale – Bloemfontein 2010

At the annual national Dohne Merino ram sale which was held on 17th February 2010 at Bloemfontein 52 rams were sold for R16,327 per ram.  The number sold was up by 12 rams compared to the previous year. Top price of R58,000 was attained by Wynand du Toit of the Suidplaas Dohne Stud, Protem who also got the top price on the 2009 national sale. The ram, JG080115, with breeding values for body weight: 5.70, clean fleece weight: 0.03 and fibre diameter: -1.21  has been used once in the Suidplaas Stud.  The buyer was At Liebenberg of Kroonstad. The Suidplaas Stud sold 5 rams on the national sale for an average of R35,800 per ram. The second highest price on the sale was R52,000 for a ram of  Wessels Brothers, Weska Stud, Bredasdorp and the buyers were Cecil v/d Merwe of Hencil Stud, Barkly East and Zeiss Jordaan of the  Sneeuberg Stud, Cradock.  The Weska Stud sold 5 rams for an average of R23,300 on the sale. Fanie and Hendrik Joubert of the Droogerivier Stud, Riversdal  attained the third best price of R50,000 on the sale and the buyer was Willie Smal of Smaldal Boerdery, Caledon.  This year’s sale  was marked by a large number of top sires with outstanding conformation and wool quality.  Also noticeable was the increase in the number of younger Dohne breeders who entered rams for the national sale. They attained good clearances and average prices. Buyers from all parts of the country registered for the sale which was conducted by BKB Louwid Auctioneers.

GOOD DEMAND FOR DOHNE RAMS ON 2010 AUTUMN SALES

The demand for Dohne rams  remains constant in spite of drought and poor grain prices. Turnover up by 8.2%

 

Altogether 1,068 Dohne rams were sold on the 2010 autumn sales for a record turnover of R5,840,170.  This is 8.2% better than the previous year. The average price is R5,468 per ram which 10% better than 2009.  The Dohne is still busy increasing its market share in spite of a protracted drought in parts of the summer rainfall region and poor grain prices. Slightly more rams (15) were sold on promotional sales at approximately the same price as the previous year.  A record turnover was achieved on production sales where 904 rams were sold.  The average price was slightly higher at R5,101 which is 12% more than in 2009.  Top price on the autumn production sales was R60,000 for a ram which was sold by Frans and Andries Marx, FEM Dohnes, Burgersdorp and the buyer was Wikus Bekker of Edenburg.  Frans also attained the top price on the 2008 and 2009 autumn production sales.

REGIONAL WINNERS OF TOP BREEDER COMPETITION OF DOHNE MERINO BREED SOCIETY HONOURED AT NATIONAL SALE

The 2009 regional winners of the Top Breeder Competition of the Dohne Merino Breed Society were honoured at a prize giving ceremony which coincided with the national Dohne ram sale on 17th February at Bloemfontein. The sale which was held during the evening was preceded by a mini fashion show, where woollen garments were modelled, as well as the prize giving ceremony to the regional winners. Representatives of the sponsors of the competition, Virbac Animal Health, BKB Bpk as well as Molatek presented the winners with prizes.
