THE TOP BREEDER COMPETITION

Awards to the regional Winners of the Top Breeder Competition every consecutive year.

 

All members of the Society are automatically eligible for the award.  The Virbac trophy is awarded every alternate year to a recipient chosen from amongst the Winners of the Regional Top Breeder awards made during the previous year.  Effective Sheep Breeding is the major criterion. The Top Breeder award was introduced to replace shows which were phased out because show evaluation is almost exclusively based on subjective appraisal of a few individual animals which have been artificially fed.  All aspects of breeding and management are taken into account according to an objective set of standards drawn up by the Society.  The success of the stud and its impact through the performance of breeding material distributed to the industry, as well as the service to the Society and to the community, are also factors taken into account when deciding upon the winner.

 

By their nature these awards are unique in sheep breeding in South Africa.  It is a means to create a competitive spirit amongst innovative breeders in a progressive stud industry and the awards channel the competitive spirit in a constructive direction.  The publicity and the prestige attached to both the preliminary regional award and the main award provide an excellent incentive for breeders to strive for higher achievement.  They undoubtedly have the effect of raising the overall standard and efficiency of Dohne Merino breeding in South Africa. The regional winners listed in this announcement have been evaluated and identified  according to objective standards compiled in a score card involving a number of aspects amongst others; stud administration,  breed promotion, punctual dispatching of births and classings, accuracy of data and breeding values. They adhere to minimum and maximum standards which apply to performance testing of animals, breeding and selection standards, flock composition, selection intensity, effective genetic ties and marketing performance to mention but a few. Exposure to such vigorous standards requires participants to operate with maximum efficiency at all times.  The intensity of the competition is very high as 2011 winners in some regions managed to attain a winning score by only a very narrow margin.  Some of them have won the regional competition as well as the Top Breeder award several times before which is indicative of the consistent manner in which they operate their studs and flocks as well as the competitive nature of our members.

 

In the light of the above it is obvious that these winners are leaders in the Dohne industry.  Conditions in the six regions vary from semi intensive to extensive and each winner sets the trend in his/her region for others to follow.  They are largely unselfish in their willingness to assist with promotional events, staging of courses etc.  They have a positive approach towards sharing information, breeding material and assisting fellow breeders as well as the Society.  They show outstanding management skills, are good stock men and have a good understanding of the commercial sheep industry’s  requirements to improve productivity. They are innovative in terms of the application of advanced breeding and general farming practices and some have several farming enterprises which they operate with an extremely high degree of success.  Most of them operate open nucleus systems and select from large numbers applying the principle of population genetics to achieve the highest possible selection intensity.  They retain a high proportion of the lambs after 100 day classing for final testing at twelve months of age to improve reliability and accuracy of  test results and they achieve approval percentages for rams and ewes which qualify for stud breeding in accordance to the required norms set by the Society.  They apply strict standards in terms of quality control as rams are scrutinized several times before they are offered for sale.   They render after sale support to ram buyers which contribute towards building a reliable brand name. Efficient genetic ties exist between these studs and the rest of the Dohne industry and sires from most of these studs have a profound influence on the industry at large.

 

The 2011 regional winners will compete for the 2012 national winner of the Top Breeder Competition which will be announced at the end of 2012.  Prizes will be presented to the 2011 regional winners at a pre sale function at the central show grounds, Bloemfontein on the evening of 22nd February 2012 to be followed by the 2012 national  Dohne Merino ram sale. 

TURNOVER ON 2012 DOHNE MERINO AUTUMN SALES INCREASED ONCE AGAIN

Price of rams on promotion sales up by 56% and the average price on production sales climbed by 12%.

Excellent commodity prices (wool and meat) as well a slight improvement in the grain price together with a good grain crop in the Southern Cape and Swartland had a positive influence on the demand and prices of Dohne Merino rams on the recent autumn sales of the Society.  Over the period 19^th January to 21st March altogether 1,230 Dohne rams were sold on public auction at a new record turnover of R9,417,908.  Although there were only 25 more rams sold on these sales compared to the same period last year, the average price of R7,657 is up by R1,099 (17%) per ram on 2011.  The demand for commercial ewes exceeded the supply and ewes fetched up to R3,000 and more on sales. In most cases where commercial ewes were offered for sale the average price showed a substantial increase on the previous year.  The increased demand for Dohne Merinos indicates that the breed is increasing in popularity and that it continues to increase its market share. The majority of production sales showed an increase in the average price with 1,098 rams being sold at an average of R6,855 per ram – 12% higher compared to the corresponding period last year.

 

The top price on the national sale was R130,000 and the sellers were Frans and Andries Marx, FEM Dohnes, Burgersdorp. Top price on the autumn production sales was R40,000 for a ram which was also sold by Frans and Andries Marx of the FEM Stud. Frans and Andries also attained the top price for a ram on the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 autumn production sales.  The second highest price on production sales was R33,000 for a ram which was sold on the De La Harpe Trust sale of the Normandy stud, Graaff-Reinet.  The average price on promotion sales increased by  R599 (15%) per ram on the previous year. If the predation problem can be managed and should the good wool and meat prices continue the outlook for the small stock industry looks very favorable over the medium term.

RECORD PRICES ATTAINED FOR DOHNE MERINO RAMS ON NATIONAL SALE

BEST PER RAM AVERAGE PRICE IN THE HISTORY OF THE BREED

A total of 84 buyers registered for the Dohne Merino National Sale on the 22 February 2012 in Bloemfontein.   During this sale 52 of the 53 rams offered were sold at an average  price of R28,433 per ram.  This is R8,772 per ram more than the previous year and the highest average price per ram in the history of the breed.

 

Three rams attained a price of R100 000 and higher while another three rams exchanged hands for R60000 and higher.  Top price was R130 000 for a ram by Frans and Andries Marx of the FEM Dohne Stud, Burgersdorp.  The syndicate of buyers were, namely: Koenas v/d Westhuizen of the Towerland Dohne Stud, Nieuwoudtville, Isak Smit, Piket Dohne Stud, Eendekuil and Marcellene and Andries van Rooyen of the Mullersvlei Dohne Stud, Calvinia.  The breeding values of this ram SD090381 are: BW: 4.50, CFW: -0.09 and FD: -0.37.

 

Two rams sold for R100,000 each.   The first of these rams was a ram by Wynand du Toit of the Suidplaas Dohne Stud, Protem and the buyer was Jan and Wessel-Jan van Deventer of the Blydskap Dohne Stud, Riviersonderend.  The breeding values of this ram, JG100113 are: BW: 5.36, CFW: -0.16 and FD: -1.84.

 

The second of the rams sold for R100,000 came from the sheep pens of Marcellene van Rooyen of the Mullersvlei Dohne Stud, Calvinia.  The buyers were CRUX Dohnes of Edenburg.  The breeding values of this ram, MV100301 are: BW: 2.57, CFW: 0.13 and FD: -1.12.

 

Andries Pienaar of the White Wools Dohne Stud, Molteno sold a ram for R62,000.  The buyers were Hermanus Kitshoff and Sons of Moorreesburg. They also bought a ram from Clark Rattray of the Pleasant View Dohne Stud, Swartberg  for R60,000. 

 

DH Wessels of the Weska Dohne Stud, Bredasdorp sold a ram for R60,000 to Jacobus Wessels of Bredasdorp.

 

Four Australian Dohne breeders, John Nadin of Warren, NSW, Don Mills of Corowa, NSW, Allistar Greenshields, Pylong, Victoria and Neville Triplett, Epsom, Victoria who attended the sale, purchased two rams. They paid R40,000 for a ram of the Charfontein Dohne Stud of Andries Greyling, Vrede and R44,000 for a ram by Louis Nel of the Nello Dohne Stud, Brandfort.

 

The sale which was conducted by BKB Louwid, was preceded by a mini fashion show where items of Core Merino clothing were presented.  Prizes by the sponsors BKB, Molatek  and Virbac were presented to the 2011 regional winners of the Top Breeder competition.

SPECIAL HONORARY MEMBERSHIP BESTOWED ON DOUW DE KOCK

 

At a pre sale function of the national Dohne Merino sale on 22^nd February 2012 at Bloemfontein Special Honorary Membership was bestowed on Douw de Kock, the immediate past president of the Dohne Merino Breed Society of SA.  Douw served on the council of the DMBS of SA since 1997 and served as president for the period between 2005 and 2011.

2011 REGIONAL WINNERS WINNER OF TOP BREEDER COMPETITION OF THE DOHNE MERINO BREED SOCIETY HOUNERED AT PRE-SALE FUNCTION – BLOEMFONTEIN.

 

The  2012 REGIONAL WINNERS of the Top Breeder Competition of the Dohne  Merino Breed were honored at a functioned which coincided with the national Dohne Merino national  sale  on 22nd February 2012 at Bloemfontein.  At this function they were presented with prizes by the sponsors Virbac, Molatek and BKB.
